Because I'm well-known for "playing it cool," I pretended not to realize who she was. what was that like?"), so I passed on interviewing her-but then, on my way out of the building, I turned a corner and immediately found myself face to face with like Dakota Fanning's entire entourage, at which point I awkwardly had to reach past her to hit the elevator's call button. Fanning ("So, you screamed really good in War of the Worlds! Uh. Also, there are snacks!Ĭonsidering what a big deal Coraline is for the local film scene, though-and also what a big deal it is for stop-motion animation and 3-D film in general-I decided to brave the junket and interview Selick and Gaiman. There is much last-second panicking, and much anxious preparation, and-due to the sheer number of softball interviews being conducted-there is usually very little to be gained from anything that anyone says. Then, publicists shepherd in and out members of the press as quickly as they can in order to conduct as many interviews as humanly possible.

The idea for a junket is to take all the talent from a movie (in this case, Coraline director Henry Selick, and Neil Gaiman, on whose book the film is based, and actress Dakota Fanning, who provides Coraline's voice) and trap them, I assume by some sort of cunning trickery, in one location. Their hideousness is not solely the fault of the publicists involved, nor of the interviewees, nor of the interviewers-I think it's just due to the nature of the entire goddamn thing as a whole. Junkets, for those not in the know, are more or less the most hideous things on Earth. He’s saving it for when he really wants to freak you out….Īnyway, the best part of the evening happened after the footage was shown.Leading up to Coraline's red carpet premiere tonight at the Schnitz (the film's kicking off the Portland International Film Festival, which you can read more about here), there was a press junket at the Heathman Hotel. Meaning, don’t expect every shot to be pushing out of the screen and that’s a very good thing. And unlike many 3-D movies that try too hard with the effect, based on the footage we were shown, he’s using it in a very controlled way. This is definitely not a little kids movie….Īlso, another very cool bit of info is “Coraline” is the first animated feature film to be made in stereoscopic 3-D.

As you might imagine, the movie looks similar to Henry’s previous films but it’s much more creepy.

So about that footage….since many of you like being spoiler free before walking into a movie theater, I’ll just say the footage looked incredible. Trust me, it’s a very cool story and it’s a movie you should really be looking forward to.

But when the new world turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must find a way to get home and save her real family. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better. For those that don’t know, “Coraline” is based on the bestselling book by Neil Gaiman about a girl that walks through a secret door in her home and discovers an alternate version of her life. A few weeks ago, I got to take an early look at Director Henry Selick’s (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”) next movie “Coraline”.
